After Hours The BugBall event logo in dark blue and green

Bugs, or insects and arachnids, fascinate us. At AfterHours: The BubBall, we celebrate the incredible world of arthropods, with a twist. How was your high school prom, embarrassing, excellent, or even boring? Want to give it another shot? It’s time for a do-over at The BugBall! Are you obsessed with all the little crawling, skittering, and flying creatures of the world? Do you find yourself pondering the difference between a paper wasp and a yellowjacket? Maybe you just think bugs are cool. Whatever your reasons, party at The BugBall!

Use this excuse to be a goof and cut loose at the museum. Come dressed to the 9’s, or however you like to dress up, inspired by the stunning beauty of insects. You never know, you might just get chosen as the Queen Bee (bad prom pun, get it?). Learn how to bake with insects from Brightside and Chickadee bakeries. Dine on delicious chocolate treats, inspired by various insects, made by Bloomington Chocolate Company. Bee (bug pun!) ready to get funky with performances by Sound Weasel. There is much for you to explore! Cut loose, cut a rug, and dive deep into the realm of insects at AfterHours: The BugBall!

Insects are the world’s “canary in a coal mine,” and they tell us about the state of the environment across the globe. Even if you find bugs, gross, creepy, or off-putting, take this chance to learn everything these creatures do for us, because it’s a lot. Our guest scientists will have you tapping into your childhood curiosity by getting into the world of insect communication.

Kathy Darragh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Indiana University, and Zarley Rebholz, Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Darragh Lab at Indiana University, are taking you into the nitty-gritty of how bugs talk to each other. Sound, sight, or smell, you’ll leave AfterHours: The BugBall with more knowledge than you expected.
