Oceanic coral reefs are one of earth’s most valuable resources. Coral reefs provide home for animals, protect the coasts, work as natural filtration systems, and give back to the aquatic ecosystem. In celebration of the International Year of the Reef, everyone is invited to explore the wonders of the coral reef at Wonders of Water, Saturday, July 28 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at WonderLab.

Wonders of Water will encourage hands-on exploration through a touch tank, virtual reality, scuba gear assembly demonstrations, diver safety and live feedings in the Wonder Under the Waves aquarium.

The International Year of the Reef was started through the “International Year of the Reef Initiative” (ICRI), a campaign hosted by governments and non-governmental organizations around the world to promote conservation action and strengthen long-term collaborations for coral reef conservation. From its beginnings in 1997, the ICRI recognizes that public awareness is essential to ensuring the value and threats of the coral reef are understood and addressed.

Wonders of Water is designed for children in elementary school and middle school along with their families. The event is free with museum admission and an excellent opportunity to learn more about protecting the Coral Reef and the Wonders of Water.
