The Importance of Learning Through Play for Both Enjoyment and Development
When children are doing an activity they love, they often lose track of time. Flow is a mental state of mind where a person is so absorbed in an activity that they lose track of both time and self-consciousness. When you watch visitors interact with the exhibits at WonderLab, it is clear how enthralled they are, but what might be less obvious is their significant development of science concepts and skills.
At WonderLab, play is serious learning. When attending BubbleFest, the 25th anniversary celebration of WonderLab, Bloomington families will find exhibits and activities so engaging that their attention is fully captivated – a key element for for learning.
Learning Through Play
Learning through play provides a foundation for exploration, discovery and problem-solving. Science teaching should expose learners to accurate facts, actual tools, and Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts. By incorporating play into this process, children develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively.
WonderLab offers a variety of activities and exhibits that strengthen science identities. At WonderLab we understand that each learner is unique with individual learning styles, preferences, and paces. From bubbles to pulley chairs to ramps, WonderLab has something for all learners.
According to Kate Seader, WonderLab’s Assistant Director of Museum Experience, “We do a disservice trying to separate learning from play; it makes it less engaging and enjoyable. Play allows kids to follow their interests and you will see their knowledge grow based on the paths they choose.”
Learning happens best in stimulating, inviting, and supportive environments. Expose your child to this environment by bringing them to BubbleFest, where they can grow a love for learning through play.
