Take your first step on the moon this Saturday, October 20 from 6-9 p.m. during WonderLab’s After Dark: Blood Moon Celebration.  “You’ll virtually be able to walk on the moon!” said Sarah Lynn Wells, WonderLab’s secondary and adult education specialist. “Not only that, but we’ll also take a virtual ride on the Apollo 11 space mission.”

Virtual reality moonwalking and space travel aren’t the only offerings at this weekend’s  21 and older event. The ticket price also gives visitors an all access pass to explore the cultural relevance of the Moon, Ask an Astronomer, Moonwalk dancing, trivia, hands-on science exhibits, art activities and food.

“Our moon is an active body of stunning landscapes that is utterly familiar and largely unknown,” says Emmy Brockman, WonderLab Education Director. “It has played a role in our calendar, affects our tides, been blamed for behavior, been thoroughly anthropomorphized, compelled space exploration, and had tremendous cultural significance. The moon has a firm grasp within both people’s practical knowledge and imaginations. This is an opportunity to expand both.”

According to Brockman, WonderLab’s Blood Moon Celebration is inspired by cultural reference and should not be confused with the lunar eclipse. “A Harvest Moon is the full Moon nearest the start of fall, or the autumnal equinox in mid-September,” says Brockman. “The October moon is frequently thought of as the month of the Blood Moon. It is the month when the game is fattened and preparations for winter begin.”
