Friday, July 5, 2019 is the second annual International Day of LGBTQ+ People in STEM. WonderLab is joining museums and science centers around the world in recognizing past and present accomplishments of LGBTQ+ people in STEM.
Come to WonderLab for Pride in STEM event and learn about foundational LGBTQ+ scientists, as well as meet scientists from our local LGBTQ+ community!
Bloomington PRIDE and Spencer Pride, local non- profit organizations which serves LGBTQ+ communities in Indiana, will be volunteering with WonderLab for this event.
“It is important to showcase LGBTQ+ people in STEM to help increase awareness and decrease stereotype among community,” said Sarah Lynn Wells, WonderLab’s adult and secondary education specialist. “Our mission is to make sure everyone has access to science and promote diversity and inclusivity in STEM.”
This event will include various stations set-up around WonderLab for the guests to participate. The stations will highlight LGBTQ+ scientists throughout history – including displays about their life and achievements. Other stations will have exciting hands- on activities for guests to learn about the work of the featured scientists.
No matter what your favorite STEM field is- computer science, marine biology or astronomy, we have something for you!
“Kids need to be aware of diversity in STEM fields. [This event] will help provide role models for them. It is good for them to recognize diversity,” said Wells.
WonderLab’s Pride in STEM event is one of the many events happening all around the world to recognize LGBTQ+ people’s accomplishments in STEM. Make sure to share your visit and use the following hashtags: #LGBTSTEMDay #LGBTQSTEMDay #LGBTQIASTEMDay # WLPrideInSTEM to commemorate the day.
